The White Pass & Yukon Route was begun in 1898 to aid the Alaskan gold rush. The 110-mile route connected the ocean port of Skagway, Alaska to the Yukon River at White Horse, Yukon Territory. It climbs over 3,000 feet in the first 17 miles, offering spectacular views of the Alaskan Panhandle. Closed in 1982 because of economic decline of the area, it recently reopened part of its track offering tourist rides.
