Western PacificItem #: -1361
The WESTERN PACIFIC, a latecomer to the U.S. rail system, had its gold spike ceremony on the Spanish Creek trestle in 1909. It was originally a direct Salt Lake-Oakland line with no branches, built by the Gould syndicate as part of a proposed coast-to-coast rail system. Its "Feather River Route" once boasted the famed "California Zephyr" and the "Exposition Flyer." The Western Pacific joined the Union Pacific and the Missouri Pacific in a three-way merger in 1983.
