The UNION PACIFIC building west met the Central Pacific building east at Promontory Point, Utah Territory, May 10,1869, and drove the famous gold spike connecting Americas first continental railroad. As telegraphers carried the news across the country, the two officials slated to drive the spike, one from each company, took hammer in hand and both missed the target, much to the amusement of some 500 Chinese and American railroad workers watching the ceremony.
