Crate art originated in the 1870's when railroads linked the east and west coasts and it became necessary to distinguish one grower and grade of fruit from another. The TULIP sign was taken from the colorful label on crates of fruit packed by the Perham Fruit Corporation of Yakima, Washington, which is still in business.
