WELLS FARGO, probably best known for being robbed by the bad guys in Hollywood westerns, was founded as a bank by Henry Wells and William Fargo in 1852. It provided banking mail and express service to California's booming economy and for a time included a delivery route by sea from New York to San Francisco via a land trip over the Isthmus of Panama. It purchased the Pony Express in 1861 and the Holladay Overland Stage Company in 1866. Absorbed in 1918 by the American Railway Express, it became the RAILWAY EXPRESS AGENCY in 1929 and ran until 1978.
