$4.50 bought Amedeo Obici his own fruit stand, complete with a peanut roaster, in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. He tinkered with the roaster's design, and salted the nuts to enhance their flavor. Soon he had more customers than he could handle, so together with another Italian immigrant, formed Planters Nut and Chocolate Company in 1906. MR. PEANUT was originally designed by a schoolboy in a contest sponsored by Planters for a company trademark.
