Lucky StrikeItem #: -1196
In 1916, the American Tobacco Company came up with its answer to Camel: LUCKY STRIKE. The name came from a plug-cut chewing tobacco in 1856, the era of gold and silver strikes in the West- and when a lucky strike might also mean hitting the spittoon. Its 25 year sponsorship of the Lucky Strike "Hit Parade" brought its advertising slogans into millions of American homes each week as people gathered within earshot of the radio, and later in front of the T.V. to listen to the countdown of the week's "Top Ten" songs from the sound of the newsboy's familiar call: "L-S-M-F-T, L-S-M-F-T, Lucky Strike Means Fine Tobacco" to the auctioneer's "Sold, American" which ended the show.
