The original SHAKER APPLE SAUCE label appeared in the mid-1880's on cans of special sauce made of boiled cider and was "in great demand" says Marguerite Fellows Melcher. Shaker grown fruit was among "the best obtainable" and the Shakers made their own cider and dried their own apples. Shirley, Massachusetts turned out great quantities of the applesauce annually for sale to the public.
