American Airlines pioneered the use of sleeper planes in 1936 for transcontinental flights. It was a major innovation: a single plane needed to stop only three times to cross the United States in record seventeen hours, thirty minutes. American was so proud of its Douglas Sleeper Transport planes, they patterned in-flight silverware after the sleek shape of its cockpit. And the AA EAGLE was such a hit among employees, they fought to restore the symbol when a designer hired to revamp the image, removed it.
